Key Personnel

Steve Porter

Group Chairman

Having founded the business back in 1981, Steve has gently slipped in to the role of ‘elder statesman’ within the company, supporting the wider group of Directors and Managers who are the engine room of today’s SPTG.

Steve continues to play an active role within the business, but now mixes it with wider business and community interests, groups and charities which form a strong relationship between the business and the wider world. Most of this extra activity is centred around the Island, but as Steve acknowledges, SPT have an involvement across the mainland that needs to be acknowledged and explored.

A massive fan of the ‘Wightlink Raiders’ ice hockey team, Steve can be found at Ryde Arena throughout the winter and, as soon as the Spring arrives, it’s back to his classic motorcycle racing (funny how the leathers shrink every winter!).

Malcolm Gibson

Managing Director

Malcolm has spent most of his working life with SPTG after qualifying with a local firm of accountants. After being our Finance Director for many years, he has now moved up to be MD of the transport business, which fully utilises his skills in finance and management, mixed with his deep knowledge of the industry.

In his current role, Malcolm is becoming the face of SPTG, regularly meeting with customers, suppliers and partners across the country. Sound business and financial acumen, the support of a strong (and mixed) Board, a clear vision of how the company wants to work (and be perceived by others) are all central drivers for him.

Another keen sportsman, Malcolm somehow finds time for running, cricket, football and golf while also supporting his beloved Newcastle United. Work aside, there’s always plenty to discuss on a Monday morning.

David Groves

Depot General Manager (Isle of Wight)

David’s primary responsibilities are the day-to-day running of the Cowes Depot, Central Traffic Office, Customer Services and BOC Gas Depot. He is often the first point of contact for new enquiries and is an interface between the Company and its customers.

David moved to the Island in 1998 from his native Essex and joined SPTG in 2000. He now has accumulated nearly 30 year’s experience within the transport and logistics industry.

An accomplished amateur footballer, David has helped his local team – West Wight FC – to many successes over the last sixteen years.

Nick Kirkby

Business Development Manager (Isle of Wight)

Nick joined SPTG following the acquisition of Red Funnel Distribution in 2011 and he played a central role in the successful integration of both businesses.

His role now focusses on finding new contracts and business to and from the Isle of Wight as well as maintaining strong relationships with our current customers. As one of the more computer savvy managers, Nick has also been given the additional responsibility of overseeing the company’s IT system and working with our external supplier.

Carrying his interests in technology outside of work, Nick is a big fan of gadgets and electronics, enjoying his latest ‘X-Box’ and photography.

Julian Pedler

Business Development Manager (UK and Channel Islands)

Julian joined SPT in 2012, bringing with him his specialist knowledge of offshore markets, particularly the Channel Islands. Based at our Portsmouth depot, he is primarily responsible for finding new customers and traffic for our UK Mainland services (including pallets), South Coast contract distribution and the Channel Islands. Working closely with the Hilsea DGM, Julian ensures that we maintain good relations with current customers in the region as well as finding new opportunities.

In his spare time, Julian enjoys motorcycling, kayaking and (although not a hobby) he also admits to enjoying a glass of red wine when relaxing!

Graham Hall

Operations & Compliance Director

The newest member of the Management Team, Graham has had a long career in running both local and national transport operations for a number of our industry’s main players. He has been involved in most sectors – UK & International FLTs, Groupage, Parcels, Refrigerated, Abnormal Loads and Containers.

Outside of the work environment, Graham likes to spend time on the Solent, racing and cruising yachts.
